Fishing at New Melones Lake Marina
New Melones Lake is the fourth largest reservoir in California. With a whopping 2.4 million acre-feet of water with 100 miles of shoreline, this lake is a prime spot for fishing and boating. There is plenty of space for all visitors to spread out and fully utilize the lake without feeling crowded. You can’t beat the weather with a Summer average temperature of 85-100 degrees Fahrenheit and a Winter average temperature of 32-60 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Recreation, New Melones Lake has been noted for outstanding year-round fishing for both cold and warm water species. The lake is open during the night hours, so summer fishers spend the warm hours pulling their full limit using Nightcrawlers or minnows. You can expect to find both bigmouth and smallmouth bass, along with brown and rainbow trout, and kokanee salmon within the waters at New Melones Lake. Some other common fish found here are crappie, catfish, and bluegill. Try your hand at attempting to break the New Melones Lake records for the largest fish caught.
New Melones Lake Marina has two easy-access convenience stores that are fully stocked with everything you could possibly need for your perfect fishing trip. Not to mention, one of these stores is a floating store allowing you to pull your boat right up and snag whatever you need. We carry your favorite brands of beer and other drinks, along with snacks, hot and cold foods and don’t forget the ice! Don’t worry about gassing up ahead of time, we have you covered with our easily-accessible gas docks. We also stock up on fresh bait and other tackle and fishing accessories.
Be sure you are up to date on your fishing license with California. You don’t want to show up ready to go fishing just to be turned away because your license is out of date. Check with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to make sure you have the correct and active license needed to go fishing. When you’re attempting to break a record, or even just ensure you catch a certain fish, you want to be sure you are using the appropriate lures for the fish you are looking for. California’s Greatest Lakes gives some lure tips such as:
- Bass Fishing: Plastic Worms, Zara Spooks, Rico, Spoons of various sizes, Spinnerbaits, Crank Baits, Frogs and Senkos
- Trout and Salmon: Power Bait, Rapalas, Nightcrawlers, Sparklefish, Minnow imitation lures, and Humdingers
