The more time people spend stuck at home, the more time they are spending on their phones. In turn, this increases the number of germs that may be on your phone and the importance of keeping your devices clean. This is in addition to the extra precautions that we all need to take around our homes. This has never been more true than during this COVID-19 pandemic. What can you do to keep your phone, other devices, and home as clean as possible?
Washing Your Hands
Everybody needs to be washing their hands a lot. We all know that thanks to the Coronavirus. But you don’t have to take my word for it. The following tips and information are what the CDC (Centers For Disease Control And Prevention) has to say about the importance of washing your hands. It is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Here are some more helpful tips about when and how to wash your hands in order to stay healthy. Protect yourself, your family, and your community by following these guidelines about when you should wash your hands.
- Before, during, and after preparing food
- Before eating food
- Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
- Before and after treating a cut or wound
- After using the toilet
- After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
- After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
- After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
- After handling pet food or pet treats
- After touching garbage
Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
- Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
- Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
How To Clean Your Phone
Washing your hands and cleaning your phone are going to be hand in hand. You can wash your hands frequently throughout the day, but its effectiveness is lost if you don’t also clean the items that you are touching frequently. Probably the number one thing people have their hands on is their phone. So in addition to cleaning your hands, you should be frequently making sure that your phone is clean too. Here’s how.
The best course of action is to use some disinfectant wipes — preferably you’ll use wipes that contain 70% isopropyl alcohol on your phone screen. Just within the last few days, Apple announced that using Clorox Wipes on your phone is an ok thing to do.
Don’t use rubbing alcohol. This can ruin the oleophobic and hydrophobic coatings that keep oil and water from damaging your display and other ports.
It is virtually impossible to use your phone without leaving fingerprint smudges thanks to the oils that are naturally produced by the skin. How can you get rid of them? The best way to do this is with a microfiber cloth. Just use some distilled water to get the cloth wet and wipe down the screen. Do this on the back and the sides of your phone as well. Do not squirt water directly onto your screen. Another option is to use a microfiber screen cleaner sticker. Just stick it to the back of your phone, pop it off when you need to wipe down your phone.
Cleaning Your Phone Case
When you clean your phone, you should be sure to clean the case it stays in too. Otherwise, cleaning your phone becomes much less effective. Here are some tips to do it for a variety of different phone cases.
- Plastic case: Soak in bleach and other household cleaners. Rinse and dry.
- Rubber and silicone cases: Dampen a cloth with a solution of dish soap and water. Wipe case. Dry.
- Wood cases: Dampen a cloth with a solution of two parts water to one part vinegar. Wipe case. Dry.
- Leather cases: Lightly dampen a cloth with a solution of mild hand soap and water. Dry with another cloth. Optional: Apply a leather conditioner to the case.
Always allow the case enough time to thoroughly dry before you put it back on the phone.
When your phone is clean, you don’t want it picking up germs from other places in your home — like when you set it on your bed or other furniture. Some innovative furniture companies make this possible. For example, long before the Coronavirus came along, Wilding Wallbeds was working to help you keep your home clean and safe. One way this was done is with the addition of Antimicrobial Protection to their Murphy Beds and other custom furniture.
When you have your custom furniture made at Wilding Wallbeds, this is one way to make it safer. Wilding Wallbeds has started using Antimicrobial Protection with Sherwin-Williams finishes with Microban Protection. This was initially designed for use in clinics and hospitals. This is antimicrobial technology that is infused in the finish during the manufacturing process of Murphy Beds. It is then a permanent part of the finished product. This technology protects against mold and mildew without any change to the durability or aesthetics of the Murphy Bed.
It is more than just an ordinary surface disinfectant that temporarily eliminates microbes. Antimicrobial protection works 24/7 to inhibit the growth of those pesky microbes. Your products, and therefore your home will be cleaner with more odor control because your problems will be prevented before they even start. The best part? It won’t wash off or wear away. You’ll never need to have it reapplied and it will provide protection for the life of the product.
Microban is commonly used in the sportswear industry to permanently get rid of odor, mold, and mildew. It is also popular with the producers of things like medical equipment, doors, exercise equipment, lockers and infectious control departments in hospitals and clinics. Antimicrobial protection will give you greater confidence and peace of mind with your Murphy Bed!
