Infographic: How Secure Is Your Home Really?

How safe is your home? If you’re like most people, you’ve spent an amount of time and money making sure that the security is good. You’ve got good locks on the door, maybe a security door or bars, and possibly even an alarm system. So, you’re all set, right?

You would be except for one small thing – a burglary occurs once every 13 seconds in the United States (According to research by the editorial team at Safe At Last).

Those that were burgled also had good locks on the door, alarm systems, and possibly even a security door and bars. Okay, so maybe you upgrade and decide to add a security company to the mix.

Surely now everything is going to be fine? Once again, we have to look at statistics. What’s the average response time of a security company? Ten minutes, fifteen minutes? That’s pretty snappy, isn’t it?

Except that the average burglar spends around eight to twelve minutes in your home. Most are gone before the security company even arrives. Want even more stats about burglaries? Then check out the infographic that the Safe At Last team created below.

You’ll learn a good few eye-opening facts about break-ins. Some we expected – homes without security systems are more likely to be targeted. That one made sense. After all, a professional criminal wants to get in and out as fast as possible. The more security, the longer it will take. Criminals believe in working smarter, not harder.

Some we found downright scary – burglars will rob homes when homeowners are present in 30% of cases and 51% of homes will be robbed again within a month of the first crime.

So, what do we do? The IG has some great tips about how you can make your home appear to be a harder target. Most of the suggestions centre on a simple principle – making it as difficult as possible to get in without being noticed.

What are the actual tips? To learn that, you’ll need to check the IG yourself.
