How Does A Murphy Bed Define You?

If you’re like me, you were raised in the era of Tom & Jerry. Every Saturday morning I used to pour a bowl of generic Fruity Pebbles and hunker down for 30 minutes of gratuitous animated violence accentuated with commercials slinging the newest Ninja Turtle that every young boy needed to own. Those were the best days of my life.

While watching that cat and mouse chase each other around their 50’s style home, I can recall a few instances where Tom or Jerry would inevitably use a bed that folds down out of a wall as a weapon to smash or entrap each other. As time went on, I saw these strange beds appear more and more in the media in various incarnations.

“Who actually owns those kinds of beds?” I used to think to myself. “Have I ever seen one of those before?”

As it turns out, there are all sorts of people who own and use Murphy beds throughout the world. And there’s a good chance you have have even seen one without even realizing it.

The Strange Murphy Bed Owners

In my teenage years, I remember watching an episode of HBO’s Tales From The Crypt where a reluctant vampire pulled a modified casket from his wall to slumber through the day. I thought that was actually pretty neat. It was a novel idea, too. After all, it is much harder to plunge a wooden stake through the heart of a vampire if you have a hard time finding it.

Space. The more if it we have, the more we thrive. Unfortunately, the amount of space you can have almost always depends on the amount of income you earn. So, what do you do if you live in a studio apartment?

A Murphy bed is probably the best space saving piece of furniture a studio apartment renter can invest in. It easily folds away for those times when you need to pack your apartment with late night poker players. Let the good times roll!

But let’s not forget the retired demographic. Many folks in their golden years purchase second homes in places like Surprise, AZ and usually opt for 2 to 3 bedroom homes. A Murphy bed is perfect for these retirees because they allow for space when they need it and a place for grandchildren to crash when visiting for the holidays.

The (Un?)Trendy Hipster Murphy Bed Owners

Everybody knows that hipsters are the masters of making the quirky fashionable. After all, why condemn horn-rimmed glasses to the compost pile when they could make the 21st Century much more nostalgic?

A Murphy Bed Is The Ultimate Place For A Hipster To Sleep

Regular beds are basically capitalism in mattress form. But a bed that can disappear faster than kombucha at a roof party? How post-ironic.  Even Terry Richardson would be proud.

The Regular Joe Murphy Bed Owners

Today, the middle class American has just enough disposable money to live a comfortable life. And with that disposable money comes hobbies like painting or building model airplanes. Maybe they have a man cave with a wet bar and card tables. Or perhaps they have a den outfitted with desks and office chairs. Murphy beds are the perfect addition that will allow middle class Americans the room they need to enjoy what they love.

The Stressed Out Parent Murphy Bed Owners

Parenting is hard. Especially if you have multiple children, all demanding your attention 24 hours a day. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had control once in awhile? Luckily for these folks, there are bunk Murphy beds being manufactured to help mitigate the stress these parents experience every day.
