What is a header flange?
The header flange is an important piece in a custom hot rod exhaust system. This flange connects the primary exhaust tubes to the engine block and allows the headers to be removed easily from the engine. The flange must be made of quality materials and to a precise measurement. If it is not made accurately or from the proper material, then there could potentially be an exhaust leak or warp and no longer fit to the heads properly.
If you replace a header flange with a low quality or thin flange, it might not last that long and you will be right back to having an exhaust leak and non-fitting headers. Thin flanges can change shape, or essentially warp, due to the high heat that comes from the engine. Hells Gate Hot Rods’ header flanges are made for many engine applications (the largest selection in a single location) and can also be custom made to fit your specific needs. Our flanges are built out of quality 3/8” thick, pickled and oiled steel that will resist bending or warping ensuring a correct and proper seal between the engine and exhaust system.
Most flanges for headers are used in conjunction with an exhaust gasket to help account for any imperfections or surface that are not perfectly flat and smooth. If you spend the time to make sue the finished welded header and mating surface on the head are perfectly flat, it is not necessary to use an exhaust gasket.
What type of header flanges are offered by Hells Gate Hot Rods?
Hells Gate Hot Rods has been making custom header flanges for more than 8 years now. They know the difficulty in finding the correct flanges for engines that are not as commonly supported by the larger aftermarket exhaust companies, which is what led to the creation of this hot rod company. Each flange is cut from P&O (pickled and oiled) steel. P&O steel is standard A36 hot rolled steel that has been dipped in acid to remove the mill scale and then lightly coated with oil to prevent surface rust. This leads to a material that is easy to clean and easily weldable without lots of effort to remove the mill scale. The flanges are all cut from a ⅜” thick steel with a CNC HD (high definition) Plasma Cutter. This leads to a clean and precise flange that will fit the exact engine application you are searching for and at a price that remains affordable.
Hells Gate Hot Rods is currently manufacturing over 50 different header flanges. We carry flanges for the following major car companies:
